Protect Your Tech with Pela

Folks, it's been a minute. I turn my back for one minute (plus a handful of weddings, work trips, and an unplanned apartment move) and the next thing I know, it's November. November! We have a forecast for snow next week!

Somewhere in the hustle of this autumn, Apple released the new iPhone 11. Now I am not a very tech-motivated person. But I've been working with a very old iPhone 6 poorly equipped with the minimum 16GB of storage - basically the phone equivalent of trying to shove your entire winter wardrobe in a drawer. I was at the point where I either had to buckle and buy a new phone, or resign myself to never texting anyone ever again.

And that, my friends, is how I found myself in deeply unfamiliar territory: the cutting edge of technology.

When one is forced to shell out an excessively large amount of money on a single piece of technology, one must fight the urge to keep said piece of tech wrapped in several layers of bubble wrap, indefinitely. Luckily, my sisters had a more functional recommendation - "the world's first 100% compostable phone case" from Pela (thanks, sisters!)

Like most things in our consumer economy, phone cases and accessories generate a huge amount of plastic waste. And with Moore's Law guaranteeing constant change in phone technology, that pile of plastic waste grows exponentially larger as new models are introduced and old models are left by the wayside.

Pela intercepts this cycle with a compostable case that uses no plastic. Pela cases are made from flax shive bound together with a plant-based polymer to create a fully biodegradable phone case that can protect your phone - even in some pretty stressful situations:

Pela is also a member of 1% for the Planet, through which they donate a percentage of their profits to environmentally-focused nonprofit organizations. I went for the Ocean Turquoise case, with a cute turtle engraving on the back. Donated proceeds from this case go towards ocean clean-up and conservation efforts.

To complement the protection of the case, Pela also offers a liquid screen protectant called Canopy. Don't worry, applying Canopy is much easier and less fussy than it sounds! All you do is swipe some of the solution onto your phone screen using a microfiber cloth, let it sit for a few minutes, and wipe off the excess (Pela has a handy video on how to apply, if you're still lost). I've had had Canopy on my phone for about a month now, and the screen is still pristine.

You may still be nervous about whether the Pela duo will actually work. Never fear: if your screen cracks while using Canopy and a Pela case, Pela will pay for the repairs!

One month in and my new iPhone is still crack- and scratch-free. I'm loving my Pela case! If you're upgrading your tech soon (or just looking to refresh your current set-up), I'd encourage you to give Pela a try. Now if only I could get Siri to stop eavesdropping...
